The caption of this photo on the Philippine Daily Inquirer’s October 8 (p. A20) issue sounds like a doomsday warning:
Women give baths to their children on the sidewalk at the North Reclamation Area in Manadaue City, a sign of an ever growing population squeezing itself into space that isn’t getting any larger.
Come on, does giving baths on sidewalks necessarily signify having an “ever growing population”? How small is that reclamation area really? And doesn’t the photo point more to the fact that this family lacks proper housing? Doesn’t it show, instead, the lack of immediate government action in giving this poor family good shelter?
In what seems like a subtle support for the controversial population control movement in the Philippines, the caption of this photo is an editorial lost in the Nation section.
